Let's Make Sure That Bill Erwin's Contributions
to the Film and Television Industries
are Acknowledged and Honored.

The Facts:

Bill Erwin was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for more than a half century. He also was a member of SAG, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and among the pioneers of the television and film industries. In 2005, Bill was designated an Honorary Life Member of both Academies in recognition of his long and distinguished career. Bill did not officially retire until 2006 at the age of 91. His movie and television appearances total more than three hundred shows.

While Bill may have been best known for his work on television, his film career was also significant, beginning in 1942 with his first role in You're in the Army Now. Among the stars with whom Bill shared the big screen in more than 50 feature films are Rosalind Russell, Anthony Quinn, John Wayne, Jack Nicholson, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Steve Martin, John Candy, Kevin Bacon, Ben Affleck, Sandra Bullock, and Christopher Reeve.

Bill deserved recognition in the Academy Awards "In Memoriam" during this year's broadcast but was not included. The Academy stated that members honored were chosen by lottery. However, all of the "stars" are invariably included and it seems unlikely that they are subject to a "lottery."

If you were disappointed about the decision not to include Bill Erwin and would like to express your views, call, write or e-mail the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Since Bill passed away just a few days before the New Year, please strongly urge the Academy to honor him in next year's broadcast. Please visit the Academy's contact page:

But Wait, There's More . . .

It is Not Too Late for Consideration for Bill
at the SAG Awards

The SAG Awards

The 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, January, 29, 2012. Since Bill passed away in late December, he was not included in the 2010 broadcast.
